Maldives President Urges China to Increase Tourist Arrivals

Maldives President Urges China to Boost Tourism Amid Diplomatic Tensions with India Maldives President Mohamed Muijju has called on China to take significant steps to increase tourist arrivals, addressing the need for alternative sources following cancellations by Indian tourists due to diplomatic disputes. The recent dismissal of three Maldivian ministers for 'derogatory' comments about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media has led to heightened tensions, resulting in India summoning the Maldives High Commissioner in response. The diplomatic dispute has transcended into the tourism sector, with many Indians canceling previously scheduled trips to Maldives tourist destinations. In response to this challenge, President Muijju, who is currently on a five-day visit to China, emphasized the importance of strengthening ties with China as an alternative tourist market. Speaking at the Maldives Business Forum in China's Fujian province during the second day of his visit on Tuesday, President Muijju urged China to proactively encourage more tourists to visit the Maldives, highlighting the strong partnership between the two nations. "China is our close ally and development partner," stated the Maldivian President. President Muijju commended China's 'Belt and Road' initiative, initiated by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2014. The Maldivian President credited this project for driving significant infrastructure development in the Maldives. Highlighting the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tourism, President Muijju expressed a desire for China to take effective measures to restore its position as the Maldives' leading tourist market, as it was before the pandemic. This statement was shared on the website of the Maldives President's Office.
