In recent days, the weather across various states in the United States has taken a sharp turn towards cold conditions. Snowfall, rain, and heavy rains have been prevalent, with freezing temperatures predicted for two-thirds of the country. Already, this week has seen widespread damage caused by storms and snow in different parts of the nation, as reported by the National Weather Service (NWS) yesterday on Saturday. According to a CBS report, the harsh weather claimed the lives of 83 individuals in the United States last week. Tennessee witnessed 19 fatalities, while Oregon reported 16 deaths. Additionally, three individuals tragically lost their lives after their car came into contact with downed power lines. Reports of fatalities also emerged from Illinois, Pennsylvania, Mississippi, Washington, Kentucky, New York, New Jersey, and several other states. The Pacific Northwest and parts of the South bore the brunt of severe winter conditions last week, prompting record levels of natural gas consumption for electricity generation to keep homes and businesses warm amidst the intense cold. Mississippi faced forecasts of zero-degree Fahrenheit temperatures on Saturday night, with snowfall predicted for Sunday across the Great Lakes region and the Northeastern United States.
